A ‘faculty’ is a technical name for a legal permission or dispensation. A person who is granted a faculty will be able to do something which they would not otherwise be permitted to do.

The ‘Faculty Jurisdiction’ is a system for the Church of England which provides planning controls for churches and churchyards. A Faculty must be obtained before most works to a church or churchyard are carried out.

The Church of England benefits from the ‘Ecclesiastical Exemption’ which means that, for a listed building which is an Anglican church, secular Listed Building Consent is not required. Both St Matthew’s and The Minster are listed buildings.

We are required to make our Faculty Applications available during the Public Notice period. Here below are the active Public Notices for your reference.

If you wish to object to any of the works or proposals you should send a letter stating the grounds of your objection to The Diocesan Registrar at

Minster Small Altar Table

The Minster has a High Altar Table at the East end of the church which is always in situ.  There is also has a smaller, movable altar table which is used further down the nave and in the Prayer Chapel for regular communion services throughout the week.  The current small Altar Table is not easily moved safely over the various grates and tiles of The Minster floor, despite repair, therefore a replacement is sought.  is not easy to move over the various grates and tiles of The Minster floor, so a new table which is easier to move is required.  In addition, a new table will compliment the upgrades to the Prayer Chapel.
